Next Month will See the Beginning of the 2016–2017 SFP Guitar Series

While the 36th season of the Dynamite Guitars recital series presented by the Omni Foundation for the Performing Arts began near the end of October, the concerts co-produced with San Francisco Performances (SFP) will not get under way until the beginning of next month. There will be five recitals in the 2016–2017 SFP Guitar Series, for which both single tickets and full subscriptions are currently on sale. All but one of the events will be held in Herbst Theatre; and all but one (a different one) will begin at 7:30 p.m. The specifics are as follows:

Friday, December 9, 7:30 p.m., Herbst Theatre: The series will open with a visit by the Los Angeles Guitar Quartet, whose members are John Dearman, Matthew Greif, William Kanengiser, and Scott Tenant. Their programs alternate between original compositions and innovative arrangements. In the latter category their SFP program will include performances of Johann Sebastian Bach’s BWV 1051, the sixth of his “Brandenburg” concertos, selections from Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s score for the ballet The Nutcracker, and several settings of Renaissance part song.

Saturday, February 4, 7:30 p.m., Herbst Theatre: Pepe Romero will return to give a solo recital, whose program has not yet been announced.

Saturday, February 25, 7:30 p.m., St. Mark’s Lutheran Church: This will be another return recital, this time by David Russell; and, again, the program has not yet been announced.

Sunday, March 12, 7 p.m., Herbst Theatre: Former SFP Artists in Residence Meng Su and Yameng Wang, who perform as the Beijing Guitar Duo, will return. They will be joined by flutist Marina Piccinini for a program of duos as trios. One of the highlights of the program will be Astor Piazzolla’s Histoire du Tango suite. The program will also include music by Bach, Sérgio Assad, and Chen Yi.

Saturday, April 8, 7:30 p.m., Herbst Theatre: The season will conclude with a solo recital by Chinese guitarist Xuefei Yang for which the program has not yet been announced.

Subscriptions are now on sale for $250 for premium seating in the Orchestra and the front and center of the Dress Circle, $210 for the Side Boxes, the center rear of the Dress Circle, and the remainder of the Orchestra, and $150 for the remainder of the Dress Circle and the Balcony. (These are the areas in Herbst Theatre. All reserved seats at St. Mark’s will be in the Orchestra area.) Subscriptions may be purchased online in advance through a City Box Office event page. Orders may also be placed by calling the SFP subscriber hotline at 415-677-0325. Corresponding prices for single tickets are $55, $45, and $35; but no $35 tickets will be sold for the Russell recital in St. Mark’s. The hyperlinks on the dates given above all lead to City Box Office event pages for the purchase of single tickets.
